The thing that had to happen fast, if it was ever going to happen at all, was this house. My new home, as it happens. Something I wasn’t looking for, was in fact actively avoiding taking steps toward, as far as I knew.

It’s old and creaky in some noticeable places, like my bones are more often than not these days. It’s full of light and charm and welcome, nothing that can be captured in a photograph or that I can even describe in anything approaching the manner it deserves.

It feels the way I feel. It makes me feel every way I want to. It’s difficult to leave, every time, and I wish I didn’t have to so often in these first few months.

Maybe that’s why I stay up late here, and sleep in as much as I can, and let the papers from school pile up and the plans to get a fourth job stay on indefinite hold. This is how I go about making the most – I rebel, but only by my definition of the term.

When I think about what it costs, my practical mind shies away, because it seems like it should not work. It is scary, how much it should not work. But it does, and it keeps on working, and my impractical soul laughs all the way to the kitchen and starts baking in the middle of the night.

In case you’re wondering (I usually am), I moved to this neighborhood 6 weeks ago, on about 10 days’ notice. Even when I’m not looking, I never see it coming.

People in the world with my same name. I'm related to the other two. So far it's worked out well.
