‘Tis the season for anxiety dreams and bursts of irrational happiness.

There are, of course, plenty of high-quality present and pending reasons for said happiness – but the moments at which it sweeps over me make absolutely no sense.

Down by the muddy river, dropping off a load of recycling. Going on hour 11 of a workday that’s included being kicked in the shins, sneezed in the face, and drooled on. Kids! On an interminable conference call, trying to hear over every dishwasher clank and dog bark of someone’s home life because they refuse to mute themselves on speaker.

None of it can douse the happy. There is a future so close it’s almost here, and it will include everything I love about my life now and so much more. Still, I’ll have to get there before I believe it’s actually going to happen.

Maybe this is all just part of it – if this has come true in ways I never thought I might love, then my shiny next step is really real.
