A year, and a little more, and I am so many things I had no thought or plan or notion of becoming. As it turns out, I do contain multitudes, all in this one relatively insignificant person.

I am more of an aunt than I ever thought I’d be. It’s incredible how a barely-intelligible “Aunt Susie” or a fully-articulate “Feliz cumpleanos, Tia Susana!” can affect me.

They weren’t going to stay babies forever.

But the idea that I can be in their lives the kind of powerful force of goodness that others have been in mine really did not start occurring to me until they began to speak.

You know they know who you are, but it’s when they start to ask for you by name that the heat hits your heart.

It’s probably the only available form of unconditional love in this world. They don’t need everything from you like they do from their parents.

I’m sure there are evolutionary machinations at work somewhere in there, but at an aunt’s level of remove, biological imperatives are muted.

And I am reaping all the benefits.

My future as an arthritic audiologist has never looked brighter. Sure, I’ll soon be in the market for a dexterous minion to handle those ever-tinier electronic devices.

And my biofeedback techniques need to be seriously stepped up in order to quell the trembling of my hands. Wobbly wielding of the otoscope instills confidence in no patient, and belies the confidence I have in the skills I’m building.

But I do make an excellent impression, shakes and all.

Can’t get enough of this song, despite the genre. Electronic dance music is usually beyond me. No reason not to stretch and grow though.

People in the world with my same name. I'm related to the other two. So far it's worked out well.
